Halloween Ha Ha

Bizarro is brought to you today by Eternal Crosswalks. "Bring a lunch and wear comfortable shoes."

Today's offering is from last year's Halloween week. I thought of this cartoon in the spring of '07 and hung onto it for months until it was seasonal. I don't always do that, but in this case, I really liked the gag and wanted to use it around Halloween. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was a favorite Halloween story of mine as a kid, little did I know that I would one day look not unlike Ichabod Crane.

I've also always really enjoyed pumpkin carving and got pretty good at it as an adult. Back in the early nineties, I won a national contest sponsored by TreeTop Apple Juice. The grand prize was an all-expense-paid trip for four to Disney World, which I took with my wife and two small kids. It was fun, except for the fact that the kids were there and became the typical buzzkills that overexcited/overtired children can be. The sacrifices parents make for their kids.

The next hear I won second prize, which was a small, digitial camera. Nowadays no one would consider a little pocket digital camera to be much of a prize, but back then they still carried some novelty value.

This cartoon is from Halloween day last year. I got some negative mail from straights and lesbians alike, the former thinking I was being pro-gay, the latter accusing me of gay bashing. My lesbian friends thought it was funny, however, especially the use of a golf club instead of a broom.

I never do cartoons that are knowingly anti-homosexual. GLBTs have enough trouble in our culture without my help. I poke fun at them occasionally, but only because I want to help normalize their place in our society, not because I want to disparage them.

I personally think that modern fear of and prejudice against homosexuality is as ill-informed as witch hunts of old. Who among us "chooses" our sexual proclivities? People are sexually attracted to every imaginable style, type, sound, smell, look, height, weight, costume, personality, and body part that you can name. These aren't things we choose. Some people are even attracted to people wearing stuffed animal costumes. Who "chooses" that consciously? As long as both partners are consenting adults, who am I to judge them?

Myself, I really go for chicks with small breasts.

Those three pumpkins photos are really yours???

I do admit the guy holding the pumpkin has your nose but not your hair. And the halloween/snowman murder scene, ala Calvin & Hobbs is great.

I would become gay if it meant the Christian girls with the protest signs would personally convert me back to straight.

---

I have too much hair to be Jimbo however Jimbo is better looking than I am. However fido is looking more and more like a horse's arse with each and every post.

Boy Jeremy must feel real good about himself announcing just weeks back that he hates him.

For real? Mike Duffau died? This isn't a horrible Halloween trick, is it?

I don't know the guy, but...wow. I would rather it be a horrible Halloween trick. A billion times over. :-(

fido:

What's the difference between a virgin ass and a horse's arse?

answer: One is the grandson of the other?

Banda Bing!

disclaimer: I have no idea who or what you are, it is just that your french pepere joke is getting moldier than Jerry Lewis on magic mushrooms. And when you start adding other people and insults in your posts you become a waste of skin.

While I agree that modern homophobia is indeed just as ill-informed as the witchhunts of old, I do think that the witchhunts were slightly more stupid, in the sense that to a first approximation, pretty much nobody who was targeted was actually a witch.

Only slightly more stupid, though.

Some observations:
(1) You were really cute when you were younger! What happened??
(2) You carve a mean pumpkin. Incredible.
(3) If you got hate mail from both sides for the flying lesbian cartoon, you know you're doing something right. I didn't even notice the golf club - what cracked me up was the flannel shirt and "comfortable" shoes.
(4) Does anybody besides me wonder how those chicks with the hate signs - who were smiling so gleefully for the camera - could sleep at night? They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Maybe now, somewhere, they are older and wiser and have long ago learned what creepy misguided bitches they were.

Wow. How'd you learn to carve pumpkins? Totally self taught, or book, or what?

I love the pumpkins you carved, that is awesome! So, who drew your cartoon while you were at Disney land?

The "God hates fags" ladies are disgusting human beings. If they cared to read the scriptures they are quoting there they have nothing to do with homosexuality but everything to do with sin. Everyone sins, not just gay people.

Take Luke 13 they are quoting. Her sign says "Luke 13:5" but if you read the preceding passage it says:

4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Spreading hate in the name of God is against the 10 commandments, it is using His name is vain.

And no I don't feel that bad about saying I hated Mike D. He was being a total jerk. I had no way to know he would soon perish.

Fido, just fuck your grandpa in the ass like you want and get it over with!

I missed the comfortable shoes. Thanks for pointing them out, Cat Mom. Okay, this must be said. Dan, I thought the same thing when I saw those pictures. You were a hotty back then! You remind me of the guy who was the lead in the movie "Christine". Arnie.

i also loved the flannel shirt.. that and the gulf club cracked me up. and cat mom is right-- you must be doing something right if you catch some flack from both sides.

a jerk before and after death will always be a jerk. it's more unfortunate that he had to be the jerk and you had to point it out, jeremy. and if he died in a car accident, that's really sad and i feel for his family and friends. i'm sure he wasn't actually an ass.. the internet is just a breading ground for passive-aggressiveness, and it's very hard to determine whether people are being jerks or if they just don't think about the language they use when they type. things are easily misconstrued on the and taken completely out of context. anyway...

danno-- your carving abilities are absolutely shocking! i know many artists are able to diversify their creativity, but i find most cartoonists are good at only that style. your cowardly lion was phenomenal! can't believe you only got second on it. have you done much wood/vinyl carving? you could make some REALLY awesome printing tiles for t-shirts... and you could sell them.. and i would buy one...
