Rot, Papal, Fissures

(To see the comic big-like, click it)

Bizarro is brought to you today by Perfect Gifts Suggestions.

This cartoon is an unusual amalgamation of ideas from different places. A reader suggested I do something about Edward Rock/Paper/Scissors, and a friend of mine, Derek, whose ideas I have used before, suggested an idea about Edward Scissorneck. I thought each of these ideas had some merit, but neither appealed to me on its own. When combined, however, I think they make an interesting triptych.

Of course, the movie came out back in the 1900s and appealed to a cult demographic, so I suspect a lot of my older and very young readers will not get this gag at all. I don't mind publishing cartoons that some readers won't get, though, which is just another of the growing number of reasons that I'm not rich.

Longtime readers often ask me if I've thought of doing a Bizarro movie or animated TV show. I have, but with no recurring characters, story lines, or even subject matter, what would that show be like?

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them before all the newspapers in the country go out of business and I'm forced to seek employment at a Hollywood escort service.

Well, Robot Chicken has a lot of non-sequitur bits and pieces all thrown together. I guess an animated bizarro would be just like that.

I have always contended that there would be greater world peace if only leaders resolved their differences using RPS.

...Almost everything on TV?

A friend of mine went to a Halloween party as "Edward-Speculum-Hands".

Needless to say the women stayed (actually ran away screaming) from him.

One of the best all time halloween costumes ever.

GREAT cartoon. Loved it!
I hope *all* the newspapers in the country don't go out of business soon, 'cause you's starve as an escort.

You should have drawn Edward Sparklebody (Edward Cullen).

I though that was so funny, I made my dad read it. (He didn't get it, but tried to laugh because I was laughing.)

I thought this one was great! I read the blog daily for ones like this. I appreciate all the time you put into your blog Dan...even if I don't share all your views, I think you are doing a good thing by introducing people to animal cruelty and other things with your comics. I must say though that I work retail, and I think that animals in a zoo have more rights and privledges than me. Yes I decided to take the job, but only because I was layed off from a job that I liked, and with the economy the way it is...I gotta take work where I can.

ok, you've GOT to explain that Dukes of Hazzard shot!....

just because the comic strip format forces you to completely recreate a new premise every day doesn't mean a TV show has to be full of non-sequitors!

a Bizarro TV show could possibly be a satire, located in something like a meat packing plant that hilariously points out the horrors that go on on a day-to-day basis.

or it could be located in lovely Worstville, USA, where the town is inhabited by the fattest, stupidest, most pollutiest people in the world.

just make a few key characters and have hundreds more come and go. it's what i do with my cartoons, i love to have as many new, zany characters i can think of in each episode. aqua teen hunger force does it, and some of the crazy random characters revisit from time to time.

and storyline? ATHF is another good example, as well as Squidbillies, of how story is trumped by characters and hilarity

isee3dtoo, thank thee i was not in attendance to this party your friend was at. i probably would have covered my vj and ran too. hee hee.

i guess to help put this into perspective for a man, maybe if a woman with mickey mouse man-hands™ offered to examine your prostate, and had previously dunked her hands in a bucket of ice cubes.

similar? if it made you cringe then yes...perhaps you would run to if approached in such a manner.

oops, i forgot to mention, d, i love edward rockhands version, that just screams re-make!!

No recurring characters, theme or anything for a Bizarro show? Works for Robot Chicken.

There is a Bizarro for you -- Minnie Mouse's other job - Proctologist. You never see her as much as Mickey and with the economy the way it is.

Jezzka - Edward Speculum Hands was a product of UCD Med school. He had access to multiple sizes of speculum and when I saw what was shaping up I nearly died laughing. It wasn't until later the thought he only needed one hand of speculum and the other should have been an ice bucket came to mind.

I thought it was great!

Damn, this cartoon was wildly flat and unfunny. Did this idea come to you via a fifth grader?

Anonymous said...

would've been funnier had you not used "hands" for the first two... wouldn't have made the "neck" reference as odd...

I thought there was a show called Bizarro. A late night show in the 80's I think. John Byner and Superdave? I don't know maybe I'm wrong but how would a Bizarro show differ from the likes of Monty Python's Flying Circus and Benny Hill

I'm think that it could be a mix of Live action and Animation, an actor plays the Artist, and he goes through his day and we see the comic "mature" in his mind through his day, until he has the final version and puts it down on the page. The animation is the growing Comic Idea, as bits of idea are put in and discarded throughout the day through various interactions of the Artist and his daily routine. You could have a small cameo in every episode like the cigar chomping newsstand guy.
