Break-Neck Speed
(Click on this image for a larger, funnier view)
Today's Bizarro is brought to you by Buses That Are Bad For Business.
I have a couple friends who are chiropractors, but I have to admit I don't believe in it. It scares the crap out of me. I've visited a chiropractor three times in my life, each time I spent the next 3-to-6 months with a very sore neck that seemed it would never go away.
I have a few friends that are in the mob, but I have to admit I don't believe in them. They scare the crap out of me. I've been visited by the mob three times in my life, each time I spent the next 3-to-6 months trying to get out of the locked trunk of a car.
And this is a perfect example of how a cartoonist gets ideas. I took these two real-life experiences, combined them, and voila! I created a cartoon that is at once obtuse and mysterious.
This next image is the title panel that appeared with it in some markets. I include it here today because I just happen to really like this image. The colors, the odd drawing, the lack of frelschbargen. What's not to like?

I do love the title panels and this one was great just because it was way out there. This title panel could be a t-shirt very easy a little M.C. Escher-ish.
Strong bird? Magic Trick? Light Wrench? And the bottom hand is too big for the perspective which makes it look like it is more in the foreground and that means the wrench is not above the hand but the bird is still bringing it forward. Then you add the upside-down note which has a flag and upside-down flags means distress so is the bird in distress?
I think this front panel is saying you really want to be a magician but your singing makes people distressed.
p.s. I love the word verification -- today's word is "unargh" something an "unpirate" might "unsay"
P.S. Dan if you use my P.S. above for a comic, I don't want to be paid, I just want my last name in the signature block... Freak out my unpirate friends.
My little league team was the pirates (we lost every game for three years) and last year I had my students laughing with "I'm a pirate!"
P.P.S. If you think about the P.S. above.
My little league team was Pirates and we lost every game for three years. True story.
So maybe it was because of the eye patches, peg legs, and hooks we used... ...and all of our pirate parents in the stand going Argh!
The inverted bird is upright? Granted it's hatless, but the bird & musical note together suggest that the rest of the title panel is upside down. Very cruel of you, Dan, to be dropping the wrench-perch upon that poor animal.
what in the world is "frelschbargen"?
did you make that word up? it sounds German, but a google search yields only 1 result - your blog!
I SO do not get the bird singing on a wrench being levitated above a guy's hand...????
If the bird had a coconut he would be straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
jeremy,
I.E. Coward punk!!!!
Anyone else on here you'd like to wish an untimely death to.
Cat mom:
The front panel is a little extra that is shown on Sundays. Some papers show it and some don't. In Bizarro it is usually something that totally does not make sense. I believe that Dan has tried the magic mushroom the night before when he draws them. They are just for fun.
In other strips the first two panels are throw away panels on Sunday. My favorite is BC when Johnny Hart was still alive. The first two panels was usually some "ant" joke that had nothing to do with the rest of the Sunday strip.
