In honor of Earth Day, Crazy Half-Nekked Wife was down in Times Square taking a shower on the sidewalk today as part of a PETA demonstration about the environment. Apparently, it takes 5,000 gallons of water to raise one pound of beef, so being vegetarian is an excellent way to lessen your carbon footprint. Also, the UN Committee on Agriculture last year released a study citing animal agriculture as a bigger contributor to greenhouse gases than all transportation combined. PETA said it best: If you think you're an environmentalist and you're still eating meat, think again.
Hope you enjoy these dandy photos of CHNW and her fellow activist, Chloe Jo, in Times Square today.
Here's a link to a story in the NYTimes about it. The naked cowboy in the Times pic was not part of the event, he's just a permanent fixture of Times Square, wandering around singing to tourists for money. I guess he was excited to see other people with his minimalist approach to fashion, so he joined in.

Your wife is an inspiration! Please thank her for spending her time doing this sort of thing.
You make a good point about the connection between environmentalism and eating meat. It's food for thought (sorry, couldn't resist!).
Apparently, it takes 5,000 gallons of water to raise one pound of beef, so being vegetarian is an excellent way to lessen your carbon footprint.
Good tip, I'll have to check that out. But it's possible that you have more carbon in your water out there than we have down here.
you need to keep a scrapbook to hold all the newspaper clippings of CHNW's coverage, or lack there of...hehe. eh too funny!
Ha! I love Creepy Guy in pic #3, raising his camera up high enough to grab a shot of the ladies' intimate areas. Gotta love New Yawk.
I do believe the 5,000 gallon figure (though living in a metric country, I'm not sure how much a gallon is), but it's only true for the USA.
For some unknown reason, the USA insists on feeding its cattle human food, such as corn. This results in several sources of inefficiency, such as transportation of feed from the farm to the cow, and using twice the land that just keeping cows dows.
Civilised countries feed their cattle with grass, which has a much lower footprint, both literally (you only use the space that the cows occupy) and figuratively.
I admire her--and I definately clicked on the link and gave my two bits on the article and its comments.
I'm pretty upset with the reactions people posted. Their arguments were ridiculus and they made themselves feel better for slaughtering animals and the earth by implying PETA smells funny and forces new initiates to walk around naked. Talk about smart. I have a feeling someone has one too many vasoconstricted arteries... time to lay off the saturated fats and cholesterol, eh?
What are the water requirements to produce an equivalent amount of complete vegetable protein? I guess Francis Moore Lappe covers all that but I hear print is dead.
