Dancing For Dollars

(click image to eyeball it more clearly)

Bizarro is brought to you today by
Dancing Diplomacy.

I have a few friends who really like that Dancing With The Stars TV show. Otherwise, they seem completely normal, even extraordinary and cool. As for myself, I'd rather watch paint drying than a dancing competition. I like a few forms of dancing, like flamenco and tap, but even still, I can't imagine watching people do it every week for prizes or money or whatever.

Of course, neither CHNW nor I have any interest in any of the modern game shows, no matter how many pretty girls in tight clothing that they feature. I've tried watching a few that were recommended by people I trust or admire – The Amazing Race, American Idol, America's Top Model, Who Farted? – but as of yet, I cannot make it beyond the first commercial. It's one of those things I can't imagine is popular, and yet it is, and wildly so.

So here are a few new takes on the dancing craze. Hope you enjoy them. If you don't, keep it on the down low. Cartoonists, with the exception of Jim Davis, have feelings, too.

  1. who farted?, is that even a real show? i hardly watch television, so i wouldn't know. although recently my roommate was watching the boob tube and i overheard a commercial for a reality show called bromance. i immediately wanted to set fire to the curtains, just so the stench of what i had heard could be replaced by burning nylon.

perhaps bromance and who farted? is one and the same? i can only imagine both involve a lot of hot air up the nu nu.

  2. speaking of jim davis, have you seen the "garfield without garfield" webcomic?
it's kind of cool, it's garfield comics with garfield removed, so it looks like the owner is a pathetic schizophrenic guy talking to himself.

  3. correction: it's "garfield minus garfield," my bad.
    here's a link, as well:

  4. Why does Jim Davis look like Rush Limbaugh to me in that photo?

  5. i always hear side-comments about Jim Davis, as the one here, but have never heard exactly what it is that he does that makes people dislike him so. i know these types of people are usually closet freaks or jerks, but i was just curious about what the deal was with him. any info anybody?

  6. It's a good question, but one I can't fully answer here. I have personal stories I'd rather not share, but suffice to say that his ego and his talent are not in balance. Plus, he hasn't written or drawn a strip in decades and makes billions of dollars a minute off of what is basically Snoopy in a cat suit. When you're at the top and don't have the chops to back it up, you're fair game, I guess.

  7. Gosh, Dan, after tomorrow it's gonna get a whole lot harder to come up with amusing visuals for stuff like "Who Farted?" huh. Oh well, every silver lining has a cloud I guess.

  8. Hello,

One of the firt cartoonist i actually ever spoke to on the phone was a guy by the name of Arnold roth. He called me answering a question i had. I actually didnt know who he was.

Anyways after reading about him once i was on internet i did not know he won as many awards as he did and had the respect of the cartoon comunity .

    look it up,

arnold roth..iev emailed him back and forth a few times sinced then although now ehe admits that his wife does the typing.

anyways one of his quotes to me on phone was

"If i had my way there would be no garfield"

he is correct i dont think people realize that garfield is run by a corporartion that hires 100 gag writers to tell the same unfunny joke everyday .you would think with 100 gag writers some thing would be funny once in a while.

  10. Piraro,

Do you think YOUR ego and talent are in balance? I am genuinely curious.

  14. Hey, Dan, I just thought you might like to see this cartoon I drew in February 2008:

I'm not saying you stole the "Dancing with the Planets" idea or anything, but you probably guessed that you weren't the only one to think of it. Just like you said last week, "Considering the sheer volume of cartoons that have been published in our language, it is difficult to hit on original ideas..."

    :)

  18. TV game shows. The scum of all televised scum. And yet, I've happened upon one last ray of shiny hope: Cash Cab (it's on the Discovery Channel).

A moderately-cool gameshow host? Could it be??

A showcase of the clueless New Yorkers that wander the streets and confirm in our minds the hopelessness of humanity? Look past the dark side of that, and my goodness do we have ourselves some entertainment!

I dare advise you should check it out.
