Bizarro is brought to you today by Ethnic Dancing.The cartoon at left was suggested to me by a reader who noted that the Hawaiian hula dance is a method of story telling and perhaps it needed translation into Spanish by a flamenco dancer. It's a simple idea but I liked it and drew it pretty much as they described. I'm a big fan of flamenco, by the way, and spent many hours pounding my heels on hard floors when I was a kid. I think I would have been good at it.
The therapy cartoon was a reaction to a memory I have of a therapist I had back in the early nineties who used to regularly nod off during my sessions. At the time I was very agitated and emotional during the sessions so I can't imagine what I could have done to keep her any more entertained. A few months into therapy she died unexpectedly, so I forgave her. Fortunately, she did not die during one of our sessions. I'm not sure I would have ever sought therapy again fearing that my problems were lethally boring.
This last cartoon is one from over ten years ago that a textbook publishing company recently asked about including in one of their books. I remembered how much I liked it and thought I'd share it with you people. If you're not familiar enough with the work of Magritte, here is the original painting from which this cartoon grew. Since the cartoon is already a bit opaque, I translated his original French into English to make it a little more accessible. If there were such a thing as a surrealist plumber it would be interesting to hire one just to see what happens when you flush the toilet.

Hopefully this adds to the hilarity: The French "pipe" only applies to smoking pipes, a plumber pipe is "tuyau" or "conduite". So this cartoon wouldn't make sense to French speaking people!
Oh, I should add that the French word "pipe" also translates to a certain sexual act, so it could have made for a much saucier cartoon -- though probably nobody would dare publish it...

So the Eyeball of Observation is conveniently placed to look up the hula dancer's skirt???

Salvador Dali's "The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus" speaks to me like no other painting in the world -- and I have no idea why. That having been said, if Dali were alive today, I imagine he would also be a fan of your panels.

Adding a Bizarro comic is certainly a great way to make otherwise boring textbooks a lot more fun. You should talk to more textbook publishers.
Everything is translated into Spanish these days. You can press a button on your remote and hear Homer Simpson say, "Los whoohoos!"
But why don't the Spanish language shows reciprocate and let us watch their big busted soap operas and game shows in English on the separate audio channel?

If you hired a surrealist plumber to do the bathrooms, when you flushed the toilet, the bush/cheny administration would pour out of the sink faucet and grind the country into the ground, and the fountain at the city park would spew crude oil. On the upside, when you sat on the loo, the sun would shine out your - ahem - sit upon.
Hey Dan...where your therapy appts after lunch...between 1 and 3 pm...during siesta time???? You are not boring...she was just sleepy. I know...had the same problem with my therapist.
Question: what do therapists do for a living?
